Bachelor / Master thesis project or Research Assistant position: Computational support for knitting

Description:

The goal of this project is to build an end-to-end system that can detect knitted stitches and provide appropriate feedback to knitters. Building on existing work, in this project you will develop or refine an approach for tracking hand movements during hand knitting and design an application that can be used during knitting, that provides feedback about knitted stitches to the knitter, and explore interaction techniques for efficiently knitting with computational support.

Requirements:

  • Interest in knitting
  • Knowing how to knit or willingness to learn knitting at the start of the project
  • Some experience with machine learning or signal processing, esp. LSTMs or Transformers
  • Very good programming skills
  • Willingness to do empirical research (qualitative and quantitative user studies)
